Ravin Crossbows are a hit

Crossbow technology has taken tremendous strides forward in recent years, and Ravin Crossbows has been leading the way. Older crossbows were heavy, difficult to maneuver in heavy cover, and hard for some shooters to cock and unload. Ravin Crossbows addressed all of those shortcomings by developing a new line of crossbows that represents the optimal blend of high performance with user-friendly features.

At the core of the Ravin series is Helicoil technology. On conventional crossbows, the bolt (often called an arrow) sits atop a rail with the strings sliding along in contact with the rail to launch it. Because the strings are in contact with the rail during the shot, velocity-sapping friction is introduced that also causes strings to wear out more quickly. The Helicoil system is 100% friction free because strings are not in contact with the rail at any time. The cams are perfectly level horizontally, allowing the bolt to be “free-floating” in the shooting position. The result is incredible speed and accuracy.

Boy Ravin DeerNexgen Outfitters has done extensive field testing with Ravin crossbows to accurately assess their performance. The staff consensus is unanimous. Once you’ve shot a Ravin, you won’t go back to anything else. Staff members, their wives and children took a range day with the Ravin. Shooters consistently hit a paper-plate-size target 100 yards downrange. Experienced crossbow shooters present shot some groups as small as 3 inches at that range. Bolt speeds were consistently in the 390-400 fps. range and Ravin advertises speeds up to 430 fps. with the right bolts and shooting conditions.

Dan Gurr, Nexgen Outfitters’ archery manager, is especially excited by the new opportunities for hunting and shooting enjoyment the Ravin crossbows offer to young and disabled shooters.

“The biggest challenge young and physically challenged shooters have faced with crossbows is cocking them,” he explained. “We were delighted to see only 8 to 12 pounds of force was all that was needed to cock a Ravin. My 8-year-old daughter was able to cock and shoot the Ravin herself under our supervision. These crossbows deliver a whole new option to those previously unable to use crossbows.”

Gurr is also impressed with the many features Ravin has included as standard in its crossbows. A de-cocking feature eliminates the need to shoot an arrow into a target or the ground to un-cock it. The ambidextrous cocking system consists of a crank that’s almost effortless to use and unlike some other crossbow cranks, Ravin’s has over-crank protection built in for added safety. When cocked, Ravin crossbows measure only 6 inches axle-to-axle, making it much easier to hunt with one in cover.

“There’s growing acceptance of crossbows as hunting weapons across the country,” Gurr added. “Some states have special seasons, others allow their use during archery seasons, and many more permit people with physical disabilities that prevent them from using regular archery gear to hunt with them. Ravin crossbows are lighter and much easier to use and shoot than other brands, so this will open up new opportunities for people to hunt and that’s what we’re all about at Nexgen.”
